PRESS RELEASE Plainfield
Health Center Sponsors Local Basketball Event For Immediate Release: Thursday, July 24, 2003-PLAINFIELD, NEW JERSEY- The Plainfield Health Center, one of seventeen Federally Qualified Health Centers in New Jersey, dedicated to providing cost effective primary health care services for the residents of Plainfield and surrounding communities, proudly joins several other local businesses in supporting the Seventh Annual George “Gee Gee” Brown Memorial Basketball Tournament. The tournament is in honor of George Brown, whose basketball career was tragically cut short when he was killed at the very court where this tournament is held. The tournament has become a fast growing community event in Plainfield. The fundraiser is organized by Jabar Jones, cousin of George Brown, himself a former professional basketball player. Youth teams and adult teams from different parts of New Jersey participate in the event. Much anticipated appearances by Jayson Williams, formerly of the New Jersey Nets, and other past and present NBA stars is a big tournament draw. “The Plainfield Health Center is glad to sponsor events that support fitness, especially amongst our youth. At a time when children are eating more and exercising less, it is even more important to promote health and fitness in the community, for children and adults, alike,” said Dr. Susan Walsh, Chief Medical Director. “Many of the Plainfield Health Center patients attend this tournament and it gives us the opportunity to reinforce the fitness message,” said Dr. Walsh. About The Plainfield Health Center The Plainfield Health Center, incorporated as the Plainfield Neighborhood Health Services Corporation, was born in 1969 under the auspices of the 1960's Model Cities Neighborhood Program. Led by a dedicated group of community activists, the Center was initially created to provide accessible health care to the residents of the West End of Plainfield. Since then, the Center has grown, added more services, increased the number of specialties of professional health staff, and expanded its reach to the entire City of Plainfield, the City of Elizabeth, and neighboring communities. Today, the Plainfield Health Center serves more than 20,000 patients annually. Its total care program provides adult medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, adolescent medicine, school based services, dentistry and ancillary support services. |
