Eugene C. Enlow Receives Ellis Island Medal of Honor
Long Time Plainfield Health Center Supporter Lauded

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, May 14, 2002-PLAINFIELD, NEW JERSEY- The Plainfield Health Center, one of thirteen Federally Qualified Health Centers in New Jersey, dedicated to providing cost effective primary health care services for the residents of Plainfield and surrounding communities, is honored to announce the awarding of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor to former Board Member and long time supporter, Eugene C. Enlow. Mr. Enlow is so recognized for his citizenship and philanthropy, not only to the Plainfield Health Center, but to so many other worthy organizations and causes. The award is presented by the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations, Inc. (NECO), which serves as an umbrella group for over 250 organizations that span the spectrum of ethnic heritage, culture, and religion.

Founded in 1984, NECO's mission is to preserve ethnic diversity, promote equality and tolerance, combat injustice, and bring about harmony and unity among all peoples. Most notably, NECO annually presents the Ellis Island Medals of Honor to ethnic Americans from all backgrounds to recognize outstanding professional and patriotic contributions. The medals were conceived to pay tribute to the immigrant experience, remarkable individual achievement, and above all, the spirit that makes America unique among nations. Sanctioned by the United States Congress, medal recipients are listed in the Congressional Record. Ellis Island honorees have included Presidents Ronald Reagan, George Bush, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, William Clinton, Richard Nixon, and other distinguished Americans, such as Arthur Ashe, Walter Cronkite, General Alexander Haid, Lee Iacocca, Rosa Parks, Coretta Scot King, General Norman Schwarzkopf, Frank Sinatra, Barbara Walters, Elie Wiesel, and Dr. Michael DeBakey.

"Mr. Enlow is a long time friend and generous supporter of the Plainfield Health Center," said Julane Miller-Armbrister, President and CEO. "His support, including the generosity of his time and financial resources, contributes substantially to our mission to abolish access barriers to primary health care for the community we serve. We are delighted that Mr. Enlow's patriotic and professional contributions to all the organizations that he serves, is so deservedly, highly recognized."

About The Plainfield Health Center

The Plainfield Health Center, incorporated as the Plainfield Neighborhood Health Services Corporation, was born in 1969 under the auspices of the 1960's Model Cities Neighborhood Program. Led by a dedicated group of community activists, the Center was initially created to provide accessible health care to the residents of the West End of Plainfield.

Since then, the Center has grown, added more services, increased the number of specialties of professional health staff, and expanded its reach to the entire City of Plainfield and neighboring communities. Today, the Plainfield Health Center serves more than 17,000 patients annually. Its total care program provides adult medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, adolescent medicine, school based services, dentistry and ancillary support services.
